People living in Kingsbridge benefited from a pioneering initiative to promote interest in information technology when a special roadshow came to town.

Visitors to the Devon in Touch roadshow on the Quay gained instant access to a world of information aboard a purpose-built vehicle, equipped with the latest technology.

The roadshow, a joint project by Devon County Council service, BBC Radio Devon and Devon Fire Rescue, gave people in rural communities the chance to use the internet and experience the benefits of going online.

The vehicle is equipped with six computers for free use by the public and facilities to enable BBC Radio Devon reporters and presenters to broadcast live from villages where the vehicle calls.

The roadshow began its tour last September and has so far visited more than 50 communities. Staff on board have been delighted by the response - particularly that of older people keen to discover the fun of surfing the web and sending emails to friends and relatives at home and abroad.

"We have had some wonderful appreciative comments," said manager Lisa Wilson. "Many people have said the trial session has persuaded them computers can play a useful role in their lives and should not be feared. Some have enjoyed it so much, they have bought their own equipment.

"Some people have become hooked immediately and have stayed with us several hours, gaining more knowledge and sharing their experiences with other visitors."
