US electronics giant Apple has added a touch-screen iPod to its iconic range of portable music players.

The device, named iPod touch, is wi-fi enabled and comes with Apple's Safari web browser pre-installed.

It was unveiled by Apple chief executive Steve Jobs during a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

"The iPod touch is a landmark iPod, ushering in a whole new generation of features based on its revolutionary multi-touch interface and built-in wi-fi wireless networking," said Mr Jobs.

"People are going to be amazed at how thin it is and how much it does.”

The iPod touch, which is just 8 mm thick, will come with either 8GB or 16GB of memory.

Steve Jobs, Apple: "The iPod touch is a landmark iPod, ushering in a whole new generation of features based on its revolutionary multi-touch interface and built-in wi-fi wireless networking."

The 8GB model will cost $299, while the 16GB device will retail for $399.

The touch screen iPod offers a 3.5-inch widescreen display and features up to 22 hours of audio playback and up to five hours of video playback.

It will be in US shops by the end of September, Apple said.

Mr Jobs also confirmed that the iPod classic will now only be sold in 80GB or 160GB models.

The 80GB version will sell for $249 and the 160GB device $349.

Apple also unveiled a new video version of the iPod nano at the press conference.

Available later this week, the video iPod nano comes in 4GB and 8GB models for $149 and $199 respectively.

Apple announced that the price of the 8GB iPhone is being slashed by $200 to $399. The firm also plans to drop the 4GB version.

Analysts took this as a sign that the model wasn't selling well.

Samir Bhavnani, research director at research group Current Analysis West, told the Los Angeles Times: "It's Christmas in September for people who don't have iPhones. But it could indicate that sales are flat."

California-based Apple has sold more than 100 million iPods since their introduction in October 2001.
