Kingsbridge Community College student Matt Burner has won his first major title in the British Schools Surfing Championships.

After three long days of gruelling competition in challenging conditions, Matt secured his first major title in the Under 18 division of the British Schools Surfing Championships.

Matt saw off strong challenges from surfers from all over the British Isles, who had travelled to Woolacombe, North Devon, last weekend (April 25-27), to take the prestigious title.

In his final year in the competition, Matt was under great pressure, but seized his chance in a tense final with a series of critical turns to impress the judges and secure victory by the narrowest of margins.

"It was huge relief after a number of good results to get a big win like this. My board felt great and the whole weekend has gone to plan," said Matt.

There were other performances of note from Kingsbridge students, with both Zach Broad and a determined Jack Ellis making finals and Dave Pascoe narrowly missing out.

The team finished in an excellent third position.

Teacher Mark Capps said: "The students did exceptionally well over the whole contest in a range of conditions.

"Everyone performed well, though of course Matt's efforts were outstanding.

"He has worked hard for this, coming close on a number of occasions, so to finally get there was brilliant.

"It was a special moment for him and all of us."

The Kingsbridge team wanted to thank everyone who has supported them, especially Triocean Surf and Hooded Villain Surfboards.

Many of the team now head off to Newquay for the English Championships over the Bank Holiday weekend.
