A feast of running rugby

8th April 2008

Kingsbridge supporters were treated to an avalanche of tries at High House on Saturday in a feast of rugby.

After the Colts had hammered Tavistock 55-7 in their re-arranged Devon Merit Table match, the A XV overcame Bideford 62-5 on the Longfield Pitch.

The Smurftonians then continued the try rout as they powered past Bristol Saracens 67-12 in the Alan Mundy Memorial match.

The Colts XV kicked off proceedings with their third meeting against Tavistock this season.

The Kings knew that this was going to be a tough encounter given the two previous games where they have one once and lost once.

And to add a little extra spice to the match, both teams knew that whoever came out on top would claim third place in the South and West Devon Colts Merit table - which would mean a home semi-final in the County Plate Competition.

Kings started by far the stronger and had crossed the visitors line three times in the first ten minuets to take a commanding 19-0 lead.

After this it was pretty one way traffic as the visitors had no answer to the Kings best performance of the season. This was a match where the talented team finally showed what they are capable of.

Scorers - Ed Lennon (3 tries), Ben Newman (one try, three conversions), Henry Day (one try, two conversions), Robbie Graham, Blair Woodland, Jack Cope and Ross Chivers (all one try).

The only sad note after such a great performance is that the boys will not be allowed to contest the County Plate semi-final with Okehampton as the date set by the Devon RFU is this Saturday when the Colts squad are on tour in Italy.

The Kingsbridge club appealed against the decision and requested that the match could be played on Saturday 18 April (the final is scheduled for 25 April) but in their infinite wisdom this was declined by the powers that be. Surely the object and existence of the Devon RFU is to encourage the playing of rugby and not to prevent it!!

The A XV certainly proved far too powerful for their North Devon visitors as they ran in a total of ten tries. Six of those tries were converted.

The scorers for the A XV were captain Darren Hopkins (2 tries), Neil Lethbridge (2 tries), Ali Hamilton (2 tries), Matt Gillard, James Lake, Ashley Treeby and Andy Wotton (all one try).

Fly-half Paul Barker added two conversions and replacement fly half Greg Newman scored four conversions.

The final match of the day saw the Smurftonians take on the touring Bristol Saracens in the annual Alan Mundy Memorial Match.

The tourists had probably been enjoying their festivities a little too much and simply had no answer to the powerful play of the ‘Smurfs’.

In all they ran in ten tries of which six were converted.

The scorers were - Duncan Lilburn (three tries), Graham Ball (three tries), Gareth Jones, Matt Ryan, Mike Powell, Ben Sherring and Mark Lidstone (all one try).
