John Lewis and its sister store Waitrose are Britain's favourite high-street shops, according to a Which? survey.

The survey also revealed that no-frills grocers Aldi and Lidl are gaining popularity with UK shoppers.

Sports retailer JJB Sports finished in bottom place.

Currys, Woolworths and WH Smith also performed poorly in the survey of 10,655 people.

Sir Stuart Hampson, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, said: "This is a tremendous accolade for every one of our 65,000 partners and our success is down to one key factor - the hard work and efforts of each one of our Partners.

"It also demonstrates one of the principles that has driven the success of our business - that you can gain the loyalty and trust of customers by providing outstanding choice, value and service.

"Everyone at the Partnership is committed to this and I'm delighted that many more shoppers will be able to enjoy our unique customer experience as we expand Waitrose and invest in ten new John Lewis department stores over the next decade."

Marks & Spencer finished in third place, closely followed by Local Electricals, Waterstone's and the Body Shop in joint fourth.

Sainsbury, the UK's third-largest supermarket group, came 12th in the Which? survey.

John Lewis and Waitrose were awarded top marks for products and customer service, while Aldi and Lidl ranked highly for price.

Other names at the wrong end of the customer satisfaction table included MFI, PC World, Comet, Barratts Shoes and Somerfield.

"There are no surprises at the top of the table as John Lewis and Waitrose continue to excel," said Neil Fowler, editor of Which?

"But there's a minor retail revolution going on - Aldi and Lidl score well above giants such as Tesco, Boots and WH Smith. Customers appear to rate the low-price, no-frills approach.

"It's interesting to see some familiar names are at the bottom of the table. Longevity counts for nothing if your customers aren’t satisfied."
