Hillary Clinton has beaten rival Barack Obama to win the Democratic primary election in the key state of Pennsylvania.

Mrs Clinton, senator for New York, won 55 per cent of the vote to Mr Obama's 45 per cent, polling strongly among older voters, blue-collar workers and white women.

But despite her 10-point win, political analysts say the margin of Mrs Clinton's victory is not enough to turn the tables on her rival.

Speaking after her much-needed win, the former first lady told cheering supporters that America deserved "a president who doesn't quit".

"Some people counted me out and said to drop out, but the American people don't quit and they deserve a president who doesn't quit either," she said.

"Because of you, the tide is turning."

Mr Obama told supporters at a rally in Indiana that he had done well to gain ground on Mrs Clinton in Pennsylvania.

"There were a lot of folks who didn't think we could make this a close race when it started," he said.

"Six weeks later, we closed the gap. We rallied people of every age and race and background to our cause."

Mr Obama currently leads the fight for delegates with 1,648 to Mrs Clinton's 1,509, according to AP estimates ahead of the April 22 primary.

The successful candidate needs 2,025 delegates to secure the Democratic nomination.
