Anji Chant has won this year's coveted Kingsbridge Citizen of the Year award.
The accolade, which is sponsored by the town council, recognises the outstanding work of people in the local community. It was first introduced in 2004.
Anji has been involved in numerous activities which benefit young people in the town for some years.
She has been the chairperson of Spiritualized for 12 years, a youth group linked to the Baptist Church, heading up a team of volunteers who run discos, events and sports activities.
In recent years, she has organised the ice skating rink on the town square for Christmas 2006 and the South Hams Youth Festival in summer 2007.
Further afield, she has done humanitarian aid work abroad in Eastern Europe.
"There is little doubt that Anji has touched the lives of many young people in our community and she is held in extremely high regard," Kingsbridge Town Council said in a press release.
Anji received her award, a framed picture of the Kingsbridge Estuary, from the Town Mayor, Councillor Rufus Gilbert, at the annual Civic Dinner on Friday 14 March at the Kings Arms Hotel.
She gave a warm acceptance speech where she commented that she accepted the award on behalf of all her helpers.
"Anji makes a major contribution to the well being of the young people of Kingsbridge and is a very worthy winner of Citizen of the Year for 2008," the town council concluded.
Previous winners of the Citizen of the Year award are Jean Stephenson (2004), Peter Trembath (2005), David "Crunchy Carrot" Gritton (2006) and Terry Moore (2007).
