Crackdown on speeding motorists

The A38

The A38

7th February 2008

Motorists who continually drive at excessive speeds on the A38 are being targeted by the Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership.

Figures from the last two years show that although speeds are slowly reducing along this road, there is still a small group of persistent violators choosing to ignore speed limits and camera warning signs.

The study looked at all offenders travelling at speeds of 100mph and over. More than two-thirds of these were commuting between Plymouth, Torbay and Exeter.

It also showed that the most common age for offenders was between 20-29 years old - these represented 32 per cent of the total.

Superintendent Tim Swarbrick, operations department, said: "Drivers who break the law and put other road users at risk deserve to lose their licence.

"This anti social behaviour, where such high speeds are used, can have a devastating impact upon those that are left behind. Slow down or start walking!"
