A rare bottle of Nazi wine has sold at auction in Devon for nearly £4,000 ($7,800).

The 1943 bottle of red Fuhrerwein, which comes complete with a portrait of Adolf Hitler on the label, was sold to an anonymous telephone bidder for £3,995.

It had been expected to fetch nearer £800 when it went under the hammer at Plymouth Auction Rooms.

The wine, which is undrinkable because of its age, was from a collection understood to have been given to Hitler's senior officers during World War II.

A spokeswoman for Plymouth Auction Rooms said bidding for the bottle was "vigorous".

"I have never seen or heard about anything like this in my 20 years [in the business]," auctioneer Paul Keen said before the sale.

"Not only is it unusual, it is also extremely rare to find.

"We understand these bottles were given out to Hitler's top-ranking officers on his birthday."

The BBC said that the bottle was previously owned by a person living in Ivybridge, Devon.
