A modified version of the controversial video game Manhunt 2 will be released in the US on Halloween, according to the studio which produced the title.

Rockstar Games, a development division of publisher Take-Two, has successfully submitted a modified version of the game to the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), who has downgraded the title from "Adults Only" to "Mature".

Leading console manufacturers Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft refuse to allow games carrying the "Adults Only" rating on their various systems.

Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two: "Manhunt 2 is an extraordinary game, and we eagerly anticipate its release in North America."

This effectively meant that Take-Two would have been unable to sell its much-hyped title in the lucrative US market.

But the ESRB's decision to downgrade the title has allowed Take-Two to set a launch date of October 31.

The game will be released on Sony's PSP and PlayStation 2 (PS2) and Nintendo's popular Wii.

Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games, said: "Manhunt 2 is important to us, and we're glad it can finally be appreciated as a gaming experience

"We love the horror genre. Manhunt 2 is a powerful piece of interactive story telling that is a unique video game experience. We think horror fans will love it."

Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Take-Two, added: "Manhunt 2 is an extraordinary game, and we eagerly anticipate its release in North America."

Manhunt 2 is banned in several European countries, including the UK and Ireland.

Rockstar Games is also responsible for other controversial titles such as Bully and Grand Theft Auto.
