Students at Kingsbridge Community College are celebrating a year of excellent A-level results.

They achieved a record number of A and B grades at A-level this year.

The figures, which were announced on Thursday, showed that 57 per cent of entries gained the top two grades.

The overall pass rate (A-E) for the 112 Kingsbridge students who sat exams was 98.4 per cent, up from 98 per cent last year.

A special mention must go to Joe Smith, who gained four A grades in the subjects of chemistry, physics, mathematics and further mathematics.

The national pass rate rose for the 25th year in a row, with 96.9 per cent graded A to E, up from 96.6 per cent in 2006.

Roger Pope, the principal at Kingsbridge, said: "We are all absolutely delighted with these results. We are always looking to improve, so it is very pleasing to reach new heights.

"The staff and students work tremendously hard and it is super to see their efforts rewarded.

"Our new sixth form centre opens in September and that will spur us on to even greater success in the future."
